Abstract: | This thesis presents the methodology of linking Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Quality Function Deployment (QFD). The Synergic power ofTPM and QFD led to the formation of a new maintenance model named Maintenance Quality Function Deployment (MQFD). This model was found so powerful that, it could overcome the drawbacks of TPM, by taking care of customer voices. Those voices of customers are used to develop the house of quality. The outputs of house of quality, which are in the form of technical languages, are submitted to the top management for making strategic decisions. The technical languages, which are concerned with enhancing maintenance quality, are strategically directed by the top management towards their adoption of eight TPM pillars. The TPM characteristics developed through the development of eight pillars are fed into the production system, where their implementation is focused towards increasing the values of the maintenance quality parameters, namely overall equipment efficiency (GEE), mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTIR), performance quality, availability and mean down time (MDT). The outputs from production system are required to be reflected in the form of business values namely improved maintenance quality, increased profit, upgraded core competence, and enhanced goodwill. A unique feature of the MQFD model is that it is not necessary to change or dismantle the existing process ofdeveloping house ofquality and TPM projects, which may already be under practice in the company concerned. Thus, the MQFD model enables the tactical marriage between QFD and TPM.First, the literature was reviewed. The results of this review indicated that no activities had so far been reported on integrating QFD in TPM and vice versa. During the second phase, a survey was conducted in six companies in which TPM had been implemented. The objective of this survey was to locate any traces of QFD implementation in TPM programme being implemented in these companies. This survey results indicated that no effort on integrating QFD in TPM had been made in these companies. After completing these two phases of activities, the MQFD model was designed. The details of this work are presented in this research work. Followed by this, the explorative studies on implementing this MQFD model in real time environments were conducted. In addition to that, an empirical study was carried out to examine the receptivity of MQFD model among the practitioners and multifarious organizational cultures. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to find the hierarchy of various factors influencing MQFD in a company. Throughout the research work, the theory and practice of MQFD were juxtaposed by presenting and publishing papers among scholarly communities and conducting case studies in real time scenario. |

Abstract: | RMS measuring device is a nonlinear device consisting of linear and nonlinear devices. The performance of rms measurement is influenced by a number of factors; i) signal characteristics, 2) the measurement technique used and 3) the device characteristics. RMS measurement is not simple, particularly when the signals are complex and unknown. The problem of rms measurement on high crest-factor signals is fully discussed and a solution to this problem is presented in this thesis. The problem of rms measurement is systematically analized and found to have mainly three types of errors: (1) amplitude or waveform error 2) Frequency error and (3) averaging error. Various rms measurement techniques are studied and compared. On the basis of this study the rms -measurement is reclassified three categories: (1) Wave-form-error-free measurement (2) High-frequncy-error measurement and (3) Low-frequency error-free measurement. In modern digital sampled-data systems the signals are complex and waveform-error-free rms measurement is highly appreciated. Among the three basic blocks of rms measuring device the squarer is the most important one. A squaring technique is selected, that permits shaping of the squarer error characteristic in such a way as to achieve waveform-errob free rms measurement. The squarer is designed, fabricated and tested. A hybrid rms measurement using an analog rms computing device and digital display combines the speed of analog techniques and the resolution and ease of measurement of digital techniques. An A/D converter is modified to perform the square-rooting operation. A 10-V rms voltmeter using the developed rms detector is fabricated and tested. The chapters two, three and four analyse the problems involved in rms measurement and present a comparative study of rms computing techniques and devices. The fifth chapter gives the details of the developed rms detector that permits wave-form-error free rms measurement. The sixth chapter, enumerates the the highlights of the thesis and suggests a list of future projects |

Abstract: | Development of continuous cell lines from shrimp is essential to investigate viral pathogens. Unfortunately, there is no valid cell line developed from crustaceans in general and shrimps in particular to address this issue. Lack of information on the requirements of cells in vitro limits the success of developing a cell line, where the microenvironment of a cell culture, provided by the growthmedium, is of prime importance. Screening and optimization of growth medium components based on statistical experimental designs have been widely used for improving the efficacy of cell culture media. Accordingly, we applied Plackett–Burman design and response surface methodology to study multifactorial interactions between the growth factors in shrimp cell culture medium and to identify the most important ones for growth of lymphoid cell culture from Penaeus monodon. The statistical screening and optimization indicated that insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin like growth factor-II (IGF-II) at concentrations of 100 and 150 ng ml-1, respectively, could significantly influence the metabolic activity and DNA synthesis of the lymphoid cells. An increase of 53 % metabolic activity and 24.8 % DNA synthesis could be obtained, which suggested that IGF-I and IGFII had critical roles in metabolic activity and DNA synthesis of shrimp lymphoid cells |

Abstract: | Here we report the multiferroic nature of charge ordered manganite Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 for the first time. The temperature variation of dielectric constant shows broad relaxor type ferroelectric transition at around 210K and magnetization measurements shows weak ferromagnetism at 50K. The dielectric peak is very close to charge ordering temperature which is an evidence of the link between electronic state and increase of dielectric response. Butterfly variation of capacitance with voltage confirms ferroelectric nature of the sample at room temperature |

Abstract: | Fingerprint based authentication systems are one of the cost-effective biometric authentication techniques employed for personal identification. As the data base population increases, fast identification/recognition algorithms are required with high accuracy. Accuracy can be increased using multimodal evidences collected by multiple biometric traits. In this work, consecutive fingerprint images are taken, global singularities are located using directional field strength and their local orientation vector is formulated with respect to the base line of the finger. Feature level fusion is carried out and a 32 element feature template is obtained. A matching score is formulated for the identification and 100% accuracy was obtained for a database of 300 persons. The polygonal feature vector helps to reduce the size of the feature database from the present 70-100 minutiae features to just 32 features and also a lower matching threshold can be fixed compared to single finger based identification |

Abstract: | Multimode laser emission is observed in a polymer optical fiber doped with a mixture of Rhodamine 6G (Rh 6G) and Rhodamine B (Rh B) dyes. Tuning of laser emission is achieved by using the mixture of dyes due to the energy transfer occurring from donor molecule (Rh 6G) to acceptor molecule (Rh B). The dye doped poly(methyl methacrylate)-based polymer optical fiber is pumped axially at one end of the fiber using a 532 nm pulsed laser beam from a Nd:YAG laser and the fluorescence emission is collected from the other end. At low pump energy levels, fluorescence emission is observed. When the energy is increased beyond a threshold value, laser emission occurs with a multimode structure. The optical feedback for the gain medium is provided by the cylindrical surface of the optical fiber, which acts as a cavity. This fact is confirmed by the mode spacing dependence on the diameter of the fiber. |

Abstract: | The demand for new telecommunication services requiring higher capacities, data rates and different operating modes have motivated the development of new generation multi-standard wireless transceivers. In multistandard design, sigma-delta based ADC is one of the most popular choices. To this end, in this paper we present cascaded 2-2-2 reconfigurable sigma-delta modulator that can handle GSM, WCDMA and WLAN standards. The modulator makes use of a low-distortion swing suppression topology which is highly suitable for wide band applications. In GSM mode, only the first stage (2nd order Σ-Δ ADC) is used to achieve a peak SNDR of 88dB with oversampling ratio of 160 for a bandwidth of 200KHz and for WCDMA mode a 2-2 cascaded structure (4th order) is turned on with 1-bit in the first stage and 2-bit in the second stage to achieve 74 dB peak SNDR with over-sampling ratio of 16 for a bandwidth of 2MHz. Finally, a 2-2-2 cascaded MASH architecture with 4-bit in the last stage is proposed to achieve a peak SNDR of 58dB for WLAN for a bandwidth of 20MHz. The novelty lies in the fact that unused blocks of second and third stages can be made inactive to achieve low power consumption. The modulator is designed in TSMC 0.18um CMOS technology and operates at 1.8 supply voltage |

Abstract: | A Multi-Objective Antenna Placement Genetic Algorithm (MO-APGA) has been proposed for the synthesis of matched antenna arrays on complex platforms. The total number of antennas required, their position on the platform, location of loads, loading circuit parameters, decoupling and matching network topology, matching network parameters and feed network parameters are optimized simultaneously. The optimization goal was to provide a given minimum gain, specific gain discrimination between the main and back lobes and broadband performance. This algorithm is developed based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) technique for producing diverse solutions when the number of objectives is increased beyond two. The proposed method is validated through the design of a wideband airborne SAR |

Abstract: | Assembly job shop scheduling problem (AJSP) is one of the most complicated combinatorial optimization problem that involves simultaneously scheduling the processing and assembly operations of complex structured products. The problem becomes even more complicated if a combination of two or more optimization criteria is considered. This thesis addresses an assembly job shop scheduling problem with multiple objectives. The objectives considered are to simultaneously minimizing makespan and total tardiness. In this thesis, two approaches viz., weighted approach and Pareto approach are used for solving the problem. However, it is quite difficult to achieve an optimal solution to this problem with traditional optimization approaches owing to the high computational complexity. Two metaheuristic techniques namely, genetic algorithm and tabu search are investigated in this thesis for solving the multiobjective assembly job shop scheduling problems. Three algorithms based on the two metaheuristic techniques for weighted approach and Pareto approach are proposed for the multi-objective assembly job shop scheduling problem (MOAJSP). A new pairing mechanism is developed for crossover operation in genetic algorithm which leads to improved solutions and faster convergence. The performances of the proposed algorithms are evaluated through a set of test problems and the results are reported. The results reveal that the proposed algorithms based on weighted approach are feasible and effective for solving MOAJSP instances according to the weight assigned to each objective criterion and the proposed algorithms based on Pareto approach are capable of producing a number of good Pareto optimal scheduling plans for MOAJSP instances. |

Abstract: | A total of eighty-one Escherichia coli isolates belonging to forty-three different serotypes including several pathogenic strains such as enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) isolated from Cochin estuary between November 2001 and October 2002 were tested against twelve antibiotics to determine the prevalence of multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) and antimicrobial resistance profiles as a measure of high risk source of contamination. The results revealed that more than 95% of the isolates were multiple antibiotic resistant (resistant to more than three antibiotics). The MAR indexing of the isolates showed that all these strains originated from high risk source of contamination. The incidence of multiple antibiotic resistant E. coli especially the pathogenic strains in natural waters will pose a serious threat to human population |

Abstract: | An experiment was designed to assess the occurrence of multiple antibiotic resistances in Vibrio sp from different (brackish and marine) environments. Water samples front nine marine landing sites and two coastal inland aquaculture farms were screened for the Vihrio spp and assessed their resistance to twenty-two different antibiotics, which arc commonly encountered in the aquatic ecosystem. Tissue samples (shrimp, mussel and sepia) were tested from the sampling site with highest antibiotic resistance. Of' the total 119 Vihrio isolates, 16. 8'7(, were susceptible to all antibiotics. Of the resistant (83.19%) Vibrio strains, 30.3% were resistant against three antibiotics, 55.5% were resistant against 4-10 antibiotics, 14.14% were resistant against more than 10 antibiotics and 54% have shown multiple antibiotics resistance (MAR). Antibiotic resistance index was higher in Coastal 3, 6, Aqua farm 2 in isolates from water samples and all the tissues tested. Interestingly, incidence of antibiotic resistance in isolates from water samples was comparatively lower in aquaculture farms than that observed in coastal areas. Highest incidence of antibiotic resistance was evident against Amoxycillin, Ampicillin, Carbencillin and Cefuroxime followed by Rilanipicin and Streptomycin and lowest against Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline, Chlortetracycline, Furazolidone, Nalidixic acid, Gentamycin Sulphafurazole, Trimcthoprinr, Neomycin and Amikacin irrespective of the sampling sites. Results from various tissue samples collected from the sites of highest antibiotic resistance indicated that antibiotic resistance Vibrio spp collected from fish and tissue samples were higher than that of water samples. Overall results indicated that persistent use of antibiotics against diseases in human beings and other life forms may pollute the aquatic system and their impact on developing antibiotic resistant Vibrio sp may be a serious threat in addition to the use of antibiotics in aquaculture farms. |
