Abstract: | The high-affinity of [3H]y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to GABAA receptors and [3H]baclofen to GABAB receptors were studied in the cerebellum of pyridoxine-deficient rats and compared to pyridoxine-supplemented controls. There was a significant increase in the maximal binding ( Bmax) of both GABAA and GABAB receptors with no significant difference in their binding affinities (Kd). The changes observed suggest a supersensitivity of GABAA and GABAB receptors which seems to correlate negatively with the concentration of GABA in the cerebellum of pyridoxine-deficient rats. |

Abstract: | 5-Hydroxytryptamine2A (5-HT2A) receptor kinetics was studied in cerebral cortex and brain stem of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Scatchard analysis with [3H] (±) 2,3dimethoxyphenyl-l-[2-(4-piperidine)-methanol] ([3H]MDL100907) in cerebral cortex showed no significant change in maximal binding (Bmax) in diabetic rats compared to controls. Dissociation constant (K) of diabetic rats showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in cerebral cortex, which was reversed to normal by insulin treatment. Competition studies of [3H]MDL100907 binding in cerebral cortex with ketanserin showed the appearance of an additional low affinity site for 5-HT2A receptors in diabetic state, which was reversed to control pattern by insulin treatment. In brain stem, scatchard analysis showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in Bmax accompanied by a significant increase (p < 0.05) in Kd. Competition analysis in brain stem also showed a shift in affinity towards a low affinity State for 5-HT2A receptors. All these parameters were reversed to control level by insulin treatment. These results show that in cerebral cortex there is an increase in affinity of 5-HT2A receptors without any change in its number and in the case of brain stem there is an increase in number of 5HT2A receptors accompanied by a decrease in its affinity during diabetes. Thus, from the results we suggest that the increase in affinity of 5-HT2A receptors in cerebral cortex and upregulation of 5-HT2A receptors in brain stem may lead to altered neuronal function in diabetes. |

Abstract: | Distribution of toxic metal in the sediment core is an important area of research for environmental impact studies. Sediment cores were collected from two prominent region(C1 and C2) of CE and subjected to geochemical analysis to determine distribution of toxic metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu and Pb ), texture characteristics, total organic carbon (TOC) and CHNS. Statistical analysis was done to understand the interrelationship between the components. In the studied cores, metal contamination level was identified for Pb, Cu; Cr, in C1 and C2 respectively. The metal distribution depends on the granulometric factor, geogenic mineral components and anthropogenic input. Correlation analysis (CA) and Principal component(PCA) analysis also support these results |

Abstract: | Unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) are used widely in the fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) industry. These resins have the disadvantages of brittleness and poor resistance to crack propagation. In this study, hybrid polymer networks (HPNs) based on UPR and epoxidized phenolic novolacs (EPNs) were prepared by reactive blending. A HPN is composed of a backbone polymer containing two types of reactive groups that can take part in crosslinking reactions via different mechanisms. EPNs were prepared by glycidylation of novolacs using epichlorohydrin. The novolacs had varying phenol: formaldehyde ratios. Blends of unsaturated polyester with EPN were then prepared. The physical properties of the cured blends were compared with those of the control resin. EPN shows good miscibility and compatibility with the resin and improves the toughness and impact resistance substantially. Considerable enhancement of tensile strength is also noticed at about 5% by weight of epoxidized novolac resin. TGA, DMA, and DSC were used to study the thermal properties of the toughened resin and the fracture behavior was studied using SEM. The blends are also found to have better thermal stability. Blending with EPN can be a useful and cost-effective technique for modification of UPR |

Abstract: | Hybrid polymer networks (HPNs) based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and epoxy resins were synthesized by reactive blending. The epoxy resins used were epoxidised phenolic novolac (EPN), epoxidised cresol novolac (ECN) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Epoxy novolacs were prepared by glycidylation of the novolacs using epichlorohydrin. The physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the cured blends were compared with those of the control resin. Epoxy resins show good miscibility and compatibility with the UPR resin on blending and the co-cured resin showed substantial improvement in the toughness and impact resistance. Considerable enhancement of tensile strength and toughness are noticed at very low loading of EPN. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and diVerential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were employed to study the thermal properties of the toughened resin. The EPN/ UPR blends showed substantial improvement in thermal stability as evident from TGA and damping data. The fracture behaviour was corroborated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The performance of EPN is found to be superior to other epoxy resins |

Abstract: | Given a graph G and a set X ⊆ V(G), the relative Wiener index of X in G is defined as WX (G) = {u,v}∈X 2 dG(u, v) . The graphs G (of even order) in which for every partition V(G) = V1 +V2 of the vertex set V(G) such that |V1| = |V2| we haveWV1 (G) = WV2 (G) are called equal opportunity graphs. In this note we prove that a graph G of even order is an equal opportunity graph if and only if it is a distance-balanced graph. The latter graphs are known by several characteristic properties, for instance, they are precisely the graphs G in which all vertices u ∈ V(G) have the same total distance DG(u) = v∈V(G) dG(u, v). Some related problems are posed along the way, and the so-called Wiener game is introduced. |

Abstract: | Electronic resources have become a vital part of an academic library especially in universities and higher education institutions. The availability of electronic resources and the acceptance of the fonnat among the academics are rising day by day. As far as engineering students are concerned, they are much techno-savy and are more used to electronic resources. So it has become necessary for the libraries of engineering institutions to subscribe and provide access to electronic resources to satisfy its user community. Many studies have identified that academics are much preferring online journals and databases than their print counter-parts |

Abstract: | A continuous cell line (SISK) from kidney of sea bass, Lates calcarifer, has been established and characterized. The cell line was maintained in Leibovitz' L-15 supplemented with 15% fetal bovine serum. This cell line has been subcultured more than 100 times over a period of 2 years. The SISK cell line consists of predominantly of epithelial-like cells. These cells showed strong positive for epithelial markers such as cytokeratin 19 and pancytokeratin. The cells were able to grow at temperature between 25 and 32 °C with optimum temperature of 28 °C. The growth rate of sea bass kidney cells increased as the FBS proportion increased from 2% to 20% at 28 °C with optimum growth at the concentrations of 15% or 20% FBS. The distribution of chromosome number was 30 to 56 with a modal peak at 48 chromosomes. Polymerase chain reaction products were obtained from SISK cells and tissues of sea bass with primer sets of microsatellite markers of sea bass. Five fish viruses were tested on this cell line to determine its susceptibility to these viruses and this was found to be susceptible to MABV NC1 and nodavirus, and the infection was confirmed by RT-PCR and CPE. This suggests that the SISK cell line has good potential for the isolation of various fish viruses. This cell line has been shown to be susceptible to bacterial extracellular products. The SISK cell line is the India's first marine fish cell line. |

Abstract: | Development of continuous shrimp cell lines for effective investigation on shrimp viruses remains elusive with an arduous history of over 25 years. Despite presenting challenges to researchers in developing a cell line, the billion dollar aquaculture industry is under viral threat. Advances in molecular biology and various gene transfer technologies for immortalization of cells have resulted in the development of hundreds of cell lines from insects and mammals, but yet not a single cell line has been developed from shrimp and other marine invertebrates. Though improved growth and longevity of shrimp cells in vitro could be achieved by using modified growth media this did not make any leap to spontaneous transformation; probably due to the fact that shrimp cells inhibited neoplastic transformations. Oncogenic induction and immortalization are considered as the possible ways, and an exclusive medium for shrimp cell culture and an appropriate mode of transformation are crucial. In this review status of shrimp cell line development and its future orientation are discussed |

Abstract: | Urbanization refers to the process in which an increasing proportion of a population lives in cities and suburbs. Urbanization fuels the alteration of the Land use/Land cover pattern of the region including increase in built-up area, leading to imperviousness of the ground surface. With increasing urbanization and population pressures; the impervious areas in the cities are increasing fast. An impervious surface refers to an anthropogenic ally modified surface that prevents water from infiltrating into the soil. Surface imperviousness mapping is important for the studies related to water cycling, water quality, soil erosion, flood water drainage, non-point source pollution, urban heat island effect and urban hydrology. The present study estimates the Total Impervious Area (TIA) of the city of Kochi using high resolution satellite image (LISS IV, 5m. resolution). Additionally the study maps the Effective Impervious Area (EIA) by coupling the capabilities of GIS and Remote Sensing. Land use/Land cover map of the study area was prepared from the LISS IV image acquired for the year 2012. The classes were merged to prepare a map showing pervious and impervious area. Supervised Maximum Likelihood Classification (Supervised MLC),which is a simple but accurate method for image classification, is used in calculating TIA and an overall classification accuracy of 86.33% was obtained. Water bodies are 100% pervious, whereas urban built up area are 100% impervious. Further based on percentage of imperviousness, the Total Impervious Area is categorized into various classes |

Abstract: | Spent substrate, the residual material of mushroom cultivation, causes disposal problems for cultivators. Currently the spent substrate of different mushrooms is used mainly for composting. Edible mushrooms of Pleurotus sp. can grow on a wide range of lignocellulosic substrates. In the present study, Pleurotus eous was grown on paddy straw and the spent substrate was used for the production of ethanol. Lignocellulosic biomass cannot be saccharified by enzymes to high yield of ethanol without pretreatment. The root cause for the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass such as paddy straw is the presence of lignin and hemicelluloses on the surface of cellulose. They form a barrier and prevent cellulase from accessing the cellulose in the substrate. In the untreated paddy straw, the amount of hemicelluloses and lignin (in % dry weight) were 20.30 and 20.34 respectively and the total reducing sugar was estimated to be 5.40 mg/g. Extracellular xylanase and ligninases of P. eous could reduce the amount of hemicelluloses and lignin to 16 and 11(% dry weight) respectively, by 21st day of cultivation. Growth of mushroom brought a seven fold increase in the total reducing sugar yield (39.20 mg/g) and six fold increase in the production of ethanol (6.48 g/L) after 48hrs of fermentation, when compared to untreated paddy straw |

Abstract: | The towed array electronics is essentially a multichannel real time data acquisition system. The major challenges involved in it are the simultaneous acquisition of data from multiple channels, telemetry of the data over tow cable (several kilometres in some systems) and synchronization with the onboard receiver for accurate reconstruction. A serial protocol is best suited to transmit the data to onboard electronics since number of wires inside the tow cable is limited. The best transmission medium for data over large distances is the optical fibre. In this a two step approach towards the realization of a reliable telemetry scheme for the sensor data using standard protocols is described. The two schemes are discussed in this paper. The first scheme is for conversion of parallel, time-multiplexed multi-sensor data to Ethernet. Existing towed arrays can be upgraded to ethernet using this scheme. Here the last lap of the transmission is by Ethernet over Fibre. For the next generation of towed arrays it is required to digitize and convert the data to ethernet close to the sensor. This is the second scheme. At the heart of this design is the Analog-to-Ethernet node. In addition to a more reliable interface, this helps in easier fault detection and firmware updates in the field for the towed arrays. The design challenges and considerations for incorporating a network of embedded devices within the array are highlighted |

Abstract: | The effect of frequency, composition and temperature on the a.c. electrical conductivity were studied for the ceramic, Ni1–xZnxFe2O4, as well as the filler (Ni1–xZnxFe2O4) incorporated rubber ferrite composites (RFCs). Ni1–xZnxFe2O4 (where x varies from 0 to 1 in steps of 0×2) were prepared by usual ceramic techniques. They were then incorporated into a butyl rubber matrix according to a specific recipe. The a.c. electrical conductivity (sa.c.) calculations were carried out by using the data available from dielectric measurements and by employing a simple relationship. The a.c. conductivity values were found to be of the order of 10–3 S/m. Analysis of the results shows that sa.c. increases with increase of frequency and the change is same for both ceramic Ni1–xZnxFe2O4 and RFCs. sa.c. increases initially with the increase of zinc content and then decreases with increase of zinc. Same behaviour is observed for RFCs too. The dependence of sa.c. on the volume fraction of the magnetic filler was also studied and it was found that the a.c. conductivity of RFCs increases with increase of volume fraction of the magnetic filler. Temperature dependence of conductivity was studied for both ceramic and rubber ferrite composites. Conductivity shows a linear dependence with temperature in the case of ceramic samples |

Abstract: | The electrical conductivity and thermal diffusivity of pristine and iodine doped vanadyl naphthalocyanine (VONc) were studied. In the pristine sample, the temperature dependence was very weak below 300 K. The increase in conductivity at higher temperature must be due to an enhancement in carrier density with increase in thermal energy. The electrical conductivity of VONc increased when doped with iodine. The behavior of VONcI indicated that considerable changes have occurred in the electronic environment of the molecule as a result of doping. Iodine doping enhanced the thermal diffusivity of VONc. The increase in thermal diffusivity of the iodine doped sample may be due to the disorder of iodine atoms occupying the channels in one dimensional lattices. |

Abstract: | The acoustic signals generated in solids due to interaction with pulsed laser beam is used to determine the ablation threshold of bulk polymer samples of teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) and nylon under the irradiation from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.06µm wavelength. A suitably designed piezoelectric transducer is employed for the detection of photoacoustic (PA) signals generated in this process. It has been observed that an abrupt increase in the amplitude of the PA signal occurs at the ablation threshold. Also there exist distinct values for the threshold corresponding to different mechanisms operative in producing damages like surface morphology, bond breaking and melting processes at different laser energy densities. |

Abstract: | Random genetic changes generated during in vitro culture are not desirable for plant micropropagation and genetic transformation. RAPD markers were used to detect the variation in leaf disc callus cultures of Jatropha curcas, maintained in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with different auxin and cytokinin combinations. In total 41 scorable bands were produced with 11 primers. Out of 41 bands, 37 were polymorphic (91.12%). The average number of polymorphic bands was 3.36 per primer. The highest similarity (0.82) with mother plant was seen in callus maintained on MS with hormonal combination Indole butyric acid - 0.4mg/l+ N6-benzyladenine purine - 4.0 mg/l. The callus grown on MS with hormonal combinations IBA- 0.4mg/l+ BAP- 2.0mg/l, IBA- 0.4mg/l+ BAP- 2.5mg/l and IBA- 0.6 mg/l+ BAP- 2.0 mg/l also showed similarity with the mother plant. Callus maintained on MS with hormonal combination IBA- 0.2mg/l+ BAP- 2.0 mg/l was found to show least similarity (0.53) with mother plant |
