Abstract:
In this paper, we examine the relationships between log odds rate and various reliability measures
such as hazard rate and reversed hazard rate in the context of repairable systems. We also prove
characterization theorems for some families of distributions viz. Burr, Pearson and log exponential
models. We discuss the properties and applications of log odds rate in weighted models. Further we
extend the concept to the bivariate set up and study its properties.

Abstract:
In this article, we study reliability measures such as geometric vitality function
and conditional Shannon’s measures of uncertainty proposed by Ebrahimi (1996)
and Sankaran and Gupta (1999), respectively, for the doubly (interval) truncated
random variables. In survival analysis and reliability engineering, these measures
play a significant role in studying the various characteristics of a system/component
when it fails between two time points. The interrelationships among these uncertainty
measures for various distributions are derived and proved characterization theorems
arising out of them

Inthis paper,we define partial moments for a univariate continuous random
variable. A recurrence relationship for the Pearson curve using the partial moments is
established. The interrelationship between the partial moments and other reliability
measures such as failure rate, mean residual life function are proved. We also prove
some characterization theorems using the partial moments in the context of length
biased models and equilibrium distributions

Abstract:
Concentration levels of Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb and Cu in relation
to those of the nutrients - total phosphates, exchangeable
nitrates, total organic carbon, etc. have been
investigated in the sediments of Nagapattinam beach
after the 2004 tsunami. The maximum values in the
study area were 3204, 75, 71, 57 and 18.5 ug g-l for
Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb and Cu respectively; Cd was below detectable
level. All the trace elements were relatively
high in the near-shore sediments and the distribution
pattern of the metals in the study area was in the order:
Cr > Ni > Zn > Pb > Cu. The present study shows that
the tsunami has brought the clayey sediments from
the sea-bottom that were settled for years together in
inland areas as well as from the offshore sediments.
The event has changed the chemical composition of
the beach sediments and is threatening fishing grounds
even in trace concentrations

Abstract:
The effects of modifying blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with linear low density
polyethylene (LLDPE) by means of acrylic acid, maleic anhydride, phenolic resins and p-phenylene
diamine were investigated. Modification by acrylic acid and maleic anhydride in the presence of dicumyl
peroxide was found to be the most useful procedure for improving the mechanical behaviour and adhesion
properties of the blend. The improvement was found to be due mainly to the grafting of the carboxylic
acid to the polymer chains; grafting was found to be more effective in LLDPE/PVC blends than in pure
LLDPE.

Abstract:
We propose and demonstrate the possibility of using a permanently microbent bare optical fiber for detecting
chemical species. Two detection schemes, viz., a bright-field detection scheme (for the core modes), and a
dark-field detection scheme (for the cladding modes) have been employed to produce a fiber-optic sensor. The
sensor described here is sensitive enough to detect concentrations as low as nanomoles per liter of a chemical
species, with a dynamic range of more than 6 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:
Four hydrazone ligands: 2-benzoylpyridine benzoyl hydrazone (HBPB), di-2-pyridyl ketone nicotinoyl
hydrazone (HDKN), quinoline-2-carbaldehyde benzoyl hydrazone (HQCB), and quinoline-2-carbaldehyde
nicotinoyl hydrazone (HQCN) and four of their complexes with vanadyl salts have been synthesized and
characterized. Single crystals of HBPB and complexes [VO(BPB)(l2-O)]2 (1) and [VO(DKN)(l2-O)]2 ½H2O
(2) were isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Each of the complexes exhibits a binuclear
structure where two vanadium(V) atoms are bridged by two oxygen atoms to form distorted octahedral
structures within cis-N2O4 donor sets. In most complexes, the uninegative anions function as tridentate
ligands, coordinating through the pyridyl- and azomethine-nitrogen atoms and enolic oxygen whereas in
complex [VO(HQCN)(SO4)]SO4 4H2O (4) the ligand is coordinated in the keto form. Complexes [VO(QCB)(
OMe)] 1.5H2O (3) and 4 are found to be EPR active and showed well-resolved axial anisotropy with
two sets of eight line pattern

Abstract:
The distribution and accumulation of trace
metals in the sediments of the Cochin estuary during
the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon periods
were investigated. Sediment samples from 14 locations
were collected and analysed for the metal contents (Mg,
Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb), organic carbon,
total nitrogen, total sulphur and grain size. The data
were processed using statistical tools like correlation,
factor and cluster analysis. The study revealed an
enrichment of Cd and Zn in the study area particularly
at station 2, which is confirmed by enrichment factor,
contamination factor and geoaccumulation index. The
factor analysis revealed that the source of Cd and Zn
may be same. The study indicated that the spatial
variation for the metals like Mg, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn,
Cd and Pb were predominant unlike Mn which shows a
temporal variation. The strong association of trace
metals with Fe and Mn hydroxides and oxides are
prominent along the Cochin estuary. The anthropogenic
inputs of industrial effluents mainly control the trace
metals enrichment in the Cochin estuary

A novel compact RFID tag employing open stubs in a
microstrip transmission line is proposed. The prototype of the tag is
fabricated on a substrate of dielectric constant 4.4 and loss tangent 0.0018.
The tag consists of microstrip open stub resonators and cross polarized
transmitting and receiving disc monopole antennas. A prototype of 8 bit
data encoded tag is demonstrated in this communication. Method for
enhancing the performance of the RFID tag is also proposed. Magnitude
or group delay response can be used to decode the tag informations

Abstract:
Chitosan has beenwidely accepted as awall material
for preparing microcapsules of various purposes in
human medicine. The possibility of using chitosan
as a wall material for microencapsulating nutrients
and drugs for aquaculture purposes, speci¢cally to
Macrobrachium rosenbergii larvae was evaluated in
this study. Two types of chitosan-coated microcapsules
were prepared using either acetone (MEC-A) or
NaOH (MEC-N) as the cross-linking agents. They
were compared with a microbound diet relative to
total leaching of nutrients and free amino acids
(FAA). Among the microcapsules, MEC-N showed
the lowest level of total leaching of nutrients (23.3%)
during 5 h of immersion in seawater and released
65% FAA after 60min. During laboratory trials,75%
larvae had accepted the MEC-N capsule. The results
of the study suggest that chitosan can be used as a
wall material for preparing microcapsules to deliver
drugs and nutrients to M. rosenbergii larvae.

Abstract:
The CH local mode overtone spectrum of benzyl chloride in the visible and NIR regions studied by laser induced thermal lens and conventional NIR absorption is presented. The analysis shows that the −CH2Cl group is symmetrically oriented with respect to the benzene ring, thus finalizing one of the two possible conformational models predicted by electron diffraction studies. The aryl CH bonds have a slightly larger force constant than that in benzene.

This paper describes the fabrication of an ion-selective electrode in which a polymeric Schiff base complex of cobalt(II) is used as the ionophore. The main advantage of the electrode is that it is mechanically stable upto 3 months..The electrode shows a linear response in the range of 2.5 × 10-5-0.5 × 10-1 mol dm-3. The response time of the electrode is 30 s.The pH range at which the electrode works is 3.8 to 6.8. The electrode was found to be selective towards chloride ion in the presence of ions like Na+, Ca2+, Mn2+, ,Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, CH3COO-, NO3-, SO42- ,Br- and NO2-.

Abstract:
Vibrational overtone spectra of acetophenone and benzaldehyde in the visible and near-infrared regions are studied by the
dual beam thermal lens and the conventional near-infrared absorption techniques. The observed increase in the mechanical
frequency of the aryl CH bond from that of benzene is attributed to the decrease in the aryl CH bond length caused by
the electron-withdrawing property of the substituents. Overtone spectra also demonstrate that acetophenone contains two
types of methyl CH bonds arising from the anisotropic environments created by oxygen lone pair and carbonyl P electrons.
The local-mode parameters of the two types of CH bonds are compared with those of acetone and acetaldehyde. The possible
factors influencing the methyl CH bonds in acetophenone are discussed.

Chronic catheterization is illustrated using vascular-access-port model SLA where the port is surgically placed subcutaneously on
the back of the rat. The catheter is tunnelled to the neck and inserted into the jugular vein . Within 24 h rats showed normal blood
pressure and blood samples were collected at intervals with minimal stress to the animals . A comparison of the plasma catecholamine
of blood collected from vascular-access-ports with that obtained from decapitation indicates that there was minimal stress to the rats
when blood was drawn through the vascular-access-port.

Design and development of a circularly polarized and matched H-plane sectorial horn antenna have been reported By
proper trimming of the flange parameters any desired polarization can be obtained from the horn
Design of a dual-port circular patch antenna with a sector-slot for dual-frequency operation is presented. The antenna resonates at two distinct frequencies with orthogonal polarizations and broad radiation characteristics. Unlike the conventional circular patch, this antenna can be microstrip-fed to operate at either of the resonances. The two polarizations can be simultaneously excited using two electromagnetically coupled ports with an isolation better than −30 dB between the ports. This antenna has the added advantage of size reduction of 44% compared to the conventional circular patch without any reduction in gain.

Abstract:
Suffix separation plays a vital role in improving the quality of
training in the Statistical Machine Translation from English into Malayalam.
The morphological richness and the agglutinative nature of Malayalam make it
necessary to retrieve the root word from its inflected form in the training
process. The suffix separation process accomplishes this task by scrutinizing the
Malayalam words and by applying sandhi rules. In this paper, various
handcrafted rules designed for the suffix separation process in the English
Malayalam SMT are presented. A classification of these rules is done based on
the Malayalam syllable preceding the suffix in the inflected form of the word
(check_letter). The suffixes beginning with the vowel sounds like ആല, ഉെെ, ഇല
etc are mainly considered in this process. By examining the check_letter in a
word, the suffix separation rules can be directly applied to extract the root
words. The quick look up table provided in this paper can be used as a guideline
in implementing suffix separation in Malayalam language
