Abstract:
In this thesis we investigate some problems in set theoretical topology related to the concepts of
the group of homeomorphisms and order. Many problems considered are directly or indirectly related to the concept of the group of homeomorphisms of a topological space onto itself. Order theoretic methods are used extensively. Chapter-l deals with the group of homeomorphisms.
This concept has been investigated by several authors for many years from different angles. It was observed that nonhomeomorphic topological spaces can have isomorphic groups of homeomorphisms. Many problems relating the topological properties of a space and the algebraic properties of its group of homeomorphisms were investigated. The group of isomorphisms of several algebraic, geometric, order theoretic and topological structures had also been investigated. A related concept of the semigroup of continuous functions of a topological space also received attention

Abstract:
The present study gave emphasis on characterizing continuous probability distributions
and its weighted versions in univariate set up. Therefore a possible work in this direction
is to study the properties of weighted distributions for truncated random variables in
discrete set up. The problem of extending the measures into higher dimensions as well as
its weighted versions is yet to be examined. As the present study focused attention to
length-biased models, the problem of studying the properties of weighted models with
various other weight functions and their functional relationships is yet to be examined.

Abstract:
One of the fastest expanding areas of computer exploitation
is in embedded systems, whose prime function is not that of
computing, but which nevertheless require information
processing in order to carry out their prime function.
Advances in hardware technology have made multi
microprocessor systems a viable alternative to uniprocessor
systems in many embedded application areas.
This thesis reports the results of investigations carried out
on multi microprocessors oriented towards embedded
applications, with a view to enhancing throughput and
reliability.
An ideal controller for multiprocessor operation is developed
which would smoothen sharing of routines and enable more
powerful and efficient code I data interchange. Results of
performance evaluation are appended.A typical application scenario is presented, which calls for
classifying tasks based on characteristic features that were
identified. The different classes are introduced along with
a partitioned storage scheme. Theoretical analysis is also
given.
A review of schemes available for reducing disc access time
is carried out and a new scheme presented. This is found to
speed up data base transactions in embedded systems.
The significance of software maintenance and adaptation in
such applications is highlighted. A novel scheme of
prov1d1ng a maintenance folio to system firmware is
presented, alongwith experimental results.
Processing reliability can be enhanced if facility exists to
check if a particular instruction in a stream is appropriate.
Likelihood of occurrence of a particular instruction would be
more prudent if number of instructions in the set is less. A
new organisation is derived to form the basement for further
work. Some early results that would help steer the course of
the work are presented.

Abstract:
The growing demand for quality prawn seed from the farmers‘ and entrepreneurs, coupled with uncertainity of their availability from nature at the appropriate time in required quantities has prompted‘ research on problems connected with prawn seed production. Endocrine control of reproduction in the penaeid shrimp _P_. monodon has been investigated in detail by adopting a comprehensive approach to the problem. The major aspects of the study included in depth investigations of the cytological details of the reproductive and neuroendocrine organs in correlation with the process of gonadal maturation. Based on the conclusions drawn from such ultrastructural studies various endocrine manipulations were carried out to see their effects on gonadal maturation. Besides that studies on the reproductive quality of male P_. monodon and the cryopreservation of spermatophores form a part of the present investigation.
The shrimp 3; Inonodon used in the present study were collected from the offshore waters of Cochin, Madras and Mandapam and from the culture ponds of Vypeen Island near Cochin (Kerala) . The entire investigation on the cytological aspects were carried out using standard histological and electron-microscopic methods. Endocrine manipulations and cryopreservation studies is also carried out using the standard methods.

Abstract:
The term ‘water pollution’ broadly refers to the contamination of
water and water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater etc).
Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or
indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove the
harmful contaminants. This affects not only the plants and organisms
living in these bodies of water but also the entire natural biological
communities and the biodiversity.Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have been tested as
environment-friendly techniques for the treatment of contaminated water,
in view of their ability to convert pollutants into harmless end products.
These techniques refer to a set of treatment procedures designed to
remove organic or inorganic contaminants in wastewater by oxidation.
The contaminants are oxidized by different reagents such as air, oxygen,
ozone, and hydrogen peroxide which are introduced in precise, preprogrammed
dosages, sequences and combinations under appropriate
conditions. The procedure when combined with light in presence of
catalyst is known as photocatalysis. When ultrasound (US) is used as the
energy source, the process is referred as sonication. Sonication in
presence of catalyst is referred as sonocatalysis. Of late, combination of
light and sound as energy sources has been tested for the decontamination
of wastewater in the presence of suitable catalyst. In this case, the process
is referred as sonophotocatalysis. These AOPs are specially advantageous
in pollution control and waste water treatment because unlike many other
technologies, they do not just transfer the pollutant from one phase to another but completely degrade them into innocuous substances such as
CO2 and H2O.

Abstract:
Humic substances are complex polymeric structures.No other polymers with such a wide range of properties are so widely distributed in nature.But still their moleculer structures are unknown. A structural knowledge is essential in determining their reactivity with metals.In the present work structural elucidation of humic acids from three different mangrove ecosystems of Cochin area is done with the available data from functional group analysis and various spectroscopic methods.13C NMR spectra of the solid samples with CPMAS,IR and SEM are very promising in revealing the complex structures of these polymeric substances.Sorptional studies on the sediment and humic acid of mangrove ecosystem reveals that the major portion of the organic matter is not extractable with Sodium hydroxide and humic acid only a small portion of the total organic matter. Humic acid is a good complexing agent and scavenger. Due to the nonextractable nature of the organic matter present with the sediment left after alkali extraction it is a better scavenger.

Abstract:
The source, fate and diagentic pathway of sedimentary organic matter in
estuaries are difficult to delineate due to the complexity of organic matter
sources, intensive physical mixing and biological processes. A combination of
bulk organic matter techniques and molecular biomarkers are found to be
successful in explaining organic matter dynamics in estuaries. The basic
requirement for these multi-proxy approaches are (i) sources have significantly
differing characteristics, (ii) there are a sufficient number of tracers to delineate
all sources and (iii) organic matter degradation and processing have little,
similar or predictable effects on end member characteristics.
Although there have been abundant researches that have attempted to
tackle difficulties related to the source and fate of organic matter in
estuarine systems, our understanding remains limited or rather inconsistent
regarding the Indian estuaries. Cochin estuary is the largest among many
extensive estuarine systems along the southwest coast of India. It supports
as much biological productivity and diversity as tropical rain forests. In this
study, we have used a combination of bulk geochemical parameters and
different group of molecular biomarkers to define organic matter sources
and thereby identifying various biogeochemical processes acting along the
salinity gradient of the Cochin estuary
